Ozone aging is a technology that tests the aging resistance of rubber products to ozone by using environmental simulation methods to accelerate the aging process of rubber by ozone.
Ozone exists mainly in the ozone layer below the stratosphere in the atmosphere (20 kilometers from the surface), but there is also thin ozone in the surface atmosphere (mainly natural discharge phenomena such as lightning and photochemical reactions: NOx in automobile exhaust is in the ultraviolet formation of free oxygen combined with oxygen molecules to form ozone, etc.).
Because some plastic materials and most rubber materials are sensitive to ozone, even thin ozone can cause cracks in some plastic materials and most rubber materials.
Under static tensile strain conditions, the sample is exposed to a closed test chamber containing constant ozone concentration of air and constant humidity, and the sample is inspected for cracks at a predetermined time.
The following methods can be used to evaluate ozone cracking under the conditions of the selected ozone concentration and test temperature:
· After the specified test time, check whether the sample has cracks. If necessary, evaluate the degree of cracks in the sample.
· Under any specified tensile strain, measure the earliest time when cracks appear on the sample.
· For any prescribed exposure time, determine the critical strain.
The oxidation of ozone causes the rupture of unsaturated organic molecules. Ozone molecules are bound to the double bonds of organic molecules to generate ozonides. The spontaneous splitting of ozonides produces a carboxyl compound and a zwitterion with acidic and basic groups, the latter being unstable and decomposing into acids and aldehydes.
At the same time, ozone itself is not very stable and will spontaneously become oxygen and active oxygen atoms. Among them, the active oxygen atoms are easily bound to organic matter and cause damage.
